Rex Harrison was born Reginald Harrison in 1908 in Huyton, Cheshire. He made his stage debut in 1924 in Thirty Minutes in a Street for the Liverpool Rep. His film debut came in 1930 in The Great Game, he generally played characters of roguish charm, which in fact mirrored his private life.

He earned the nickname 'Sexy Rexy' being much-married, his wives include Lili Palmer and Kay Kendall. He served in the RAF during the Second World War and on his demobilization he returned to films, making successful performances in the UK and in Hollywood.

Of his English films he is, perhaps best known for Blithe Spirit (1941) and My Fair Lady (1964) for which he won an oscar.
