Trevor Howard is arguably on of Englands biggest stars of the 50s having shot to fame in 1944 in Brief Encounter. Very versatile and with an arresting presence he stayed in the top echelon for nearly 20 years, playing everthing from thwarted lovers to commandos to Conrad's Peter Willems in Outcast of the Islands. He trained initially at RADA and made his stage debut in 1934, but it wasn't until he was invalided out of the army that he made his mark. He appeared in many Hollywood movies after the mid 50s.
